Martin’s Biography

Educated in Southampton and later qualifying as a cartographical draughtsman, Martin has always had a deep appreciation for fine detail. Forgoing the opportunity to study and qualify as an architect, he attained a degree from the ‘University of Life’ following a successful police career where his acute eye for detail proved invaluable. Specialising in communications technology, his career took him to Uganda and later to Malawi on behalf of the UK Overseas Development, advising on police and customs communication systems. Having travelled extensively both in these two beautiful countries and in the Orient, Australasia and North America, the diverse cultures and wildlife has influenced his passion for wildlife art. Martin and his wife Helen share the view that every painting should ‘tell’ a story.

Traditional art has threaded throughout his life evidenced by varied commissions. These ranged from pet portraiture, theatrical western-cowboy stage scenery, large ball-room size Disney characters and fine-detailed wildlife paintings. In parallel, his keen fascination in capturing on camera the spontaneous, atmospheric and privileged moments shared with animals, both domestic and wildlife alike has become a valued source for his and Helen’s paintings.

Martin has successfully exhibited at local art venues where his artwork includes mixed media, acrylic, acrylic inks, graphite, pastels and artist quality colour pencils. He has been inspired by many internationally acclaimed wildlife artists such as Carl Brenders, Robert Bateman, Alan Hunt, David Shepherd and Terry Isaac. Also, David Bellamy for his dramatic landscapes and coastal scenes but most importantly of all, his wife Helen who has been his all-embracing and limitless source of inspiration and encouragement.

In more recent years Martin has widened his artistic experience, having spent four years as a respected bespoke picture framer. Now established in their home studio, he is re-focussing on his own artwork.
